This article appeared in the Sunday, March 18, 2001 edition of the Daily News, Lifestyle, Section E, Page 1. The article was written by Dywayne Escobedo, Daily News Contributing Writer.

DEFUNIAK SPRINGS - No building holds this country store, and it’s open for about 45 minutes a day on weekdays.

Yet hundreds of people in DeFuniak Springs, Crestview, Bonifay and Bluewater Bay depend on buying, selling, swapping, requesting and donating goods from A-to-Z there. Need a $30,000 Caterpillar tractor? No problem. Need a bag of groceries for the week? No problem. Need furniture to decorate your new home? No problem.

So where are all these bargain hunters going? To WZEP 1460-AM on their radio dial. For more than 20 years, listeners have turned to the "Country Store" program hosted by the husband-and-wife team of Art and Marty Dees, the station owners.

QVC, E-Bay and classified ads have nothing on this old-time radio show where up to 50 items a day trade hands. Sometimes deals happen so quick that before the caller has completed their on-air hawking, the click of call-waiting can be heard on the line from someone impatiently trying to get through.

"People are always looking for a bargain and wanting to dispose of unwanted items," says Marty, who does the show in addition to a cooking and health program.

"It’s easy and people are always curious what their neighbors have. You can trade just about anything. We get callers who say, ‘I have a ’65 pick-up and I want to trade it for such and such.’"

With Art manning the radio controls, it’s as if David Letterman were hosting QVC.

Caller: "I’d like to put an item on for my sister."

Art: "Does she know you’re trading her?"

Caller: "I work for a construction crew in Crestview and we always take a break to listen to the ‘Country Store.’"

Art: "It’s an hour-long show. That’s a little longer than your 15-minute break."

Caller: "Well, uh, we don’t tell anybody that."

Pat McLendon and her whole family are avid listeners, and avid participants. McLendon has unloaded two trucks, a car and a boat trailer.

"I love Art and Marty," says the 51-year-old DeFuniak Springs resident. "My mama thought the world of them. It’s just such a comfortable show. Sometimes Art’s hilarious. There’s just not one radio station in DeFuniak to listen to other than it. And if you go somewhere else and listen to the radio you’re just disappointed."

Ida Wallace, of Argyle, said she has listened to the show close to forever.

Wallace recommends former president Clinton listen to the show to furnish his new humble abodes, after listening to one local listener, "Elaine," thank the "Country Store" for stocking her house for $600.

Wallace, a child care worker, said she sold her four window A/C units when central heating and air was installed in her home and even picked up baby-sitting jobs through the program.

Yes, they’ve sold a tractor, other farm equipment, cars, trailers, houses and just about everything else imaginable.

Even Interstate 10 travelers who stumble on the program sometimes offer things for sale, like a couple recently from Punta Gorda, who were headed cross country in their RV.

But the "Country Store" still hasn’t had any takes for a man’s artificial leg one widow puts up from time to time, Marty said.

"I’d be amazed if we haven’t offered more pets for adoption than the all the Humane Society organizations put together," add Art, who started his broadcasting career in Junior high for a Winter Park radio station. He headed the public television station, WSKG, in Binghamton, N.Y., before buying the 5,000-watt DeFuniak Springs station, which plans to soon double its signal power.

Of course the "Country Store" also provides other community services too.

Sometimes WZEP listeners donate food and other items to victims of blazes, maternity clothes for young unwed mothers, or toys and clothes for needy families.

"We love doing it," said Art of the "Country Store." "It’s fun. And a lot of people enjoy it and make it a daily habit. I had one lady who called in. I called her back a little later to see how she had done. She sold one thing but had bought 15 things."
