A large ground beef recall has now been expanded to include nearly 12 million pounds of ground beef. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) says JBS Tolleson, Inc. has recalled another 5.1 million pounds of various raw, non-intact beef products that may be contaminated with salmonella newport. In October, more than 6 million pounds of ground beef was recalled. The raw, non-intact beef items, including ground beef, was packaged between July 26, 2018 and September 7, 2018. The meat was sold at Kroger and other stores. Health experts say consumption of food contaminated with salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated product. Most people recover without treatment after four to seven days, but hospitalization could happen to those with weakened immune systems. The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) advises all consumers to safely prepare their raw meat products, including fresh and frozen, and only consume ground beef that has been cooked to a temperature of 160F.
