Some displaced Bay County students are a step closer to returning to their normal school campuses. On Tuesday, reconstruction projects for three Bay County schools got the green light from the school board. Construction will begin Wednesday at Rutherford High School, Merritt Brown Middle School and Bay High School. Those three chosen due to extensive damage and the goal to get the students back on their home campus. Some work is already underway at Rutherford for repairs to parts of the roof and gym floor. Bay district facilities director Lee Walters said repairs will cost $19 million for Merritt Brown, about $7 million for Rutherford, and close to $9 million for Bay. “We’ve tried to cover all the bases on identifying the damage but we still expect the scope to increase somewhat throughout the project which is something we always try to avoid, we do not like that however in these circumstances we don’t believe we can avoid it,” said Walters. The companies in charge are all from Northwest Florida. Culpepper Construction will work on Bay, Reliant South on Rutherford, and Lord & Son Construction on Merritt Brown. No official completion date is set.
