And the first place award goes to “Western Lake”! Western Lake was awarded the ‘Best Sunset View’ and ‘Best Park or Nature Locale’ in the Perfect in South Walton 2015 Top Finalist Award presented by the Walton County Tourist Development Council.
Western Lake is one of 15 coastal dune lakes located in Walton County. Coastal dune lakes are only found in a few places in the world including Madagascar, Australia, New Zealand, and Oregon. The Walton County coastal dune lakes have a unique feature called an outfall, which allows them to have an intermittent connection with the Gulf of Mexico.
Whether you like to visit Topsail State Park, Grayton Beach State Park, Deer Lake State Park, Camp Helen State Park, or even Pointe Washington State Forest, you can get up close and personal with a Walton County coastal dune lake. Many activities in and around the coastal dune lakes you can enjoy include hiking, bicycling, kayaking, paddle boarding, boating, fishing, bird-watching, and camping. When a coastal dune lake outfall is open, you can paddle from the uplands all the way down into the Gulf seeing a variety of plants and animals, while also experiencing how these systems interact with the Gulf of Mexico.
When in Walton County, remember to experience the coastal dune lakes.
